Development funding for refugee education is often justified in terms of rights and equity – and rightly so. But Ahmed Adi’s story makes a different, equally important case: that a single, well-placed investment in one student can generate returns that ripple through an entire household, and outward into a community of tens of thousands.
Ahmed grew up in Hagadera Refugee Camp, near the Kenya-Somalia border, in a household that depended largely on humanitarian assistance. When his father, the family’s sole breadwinner died while Ahmed was still in high school, the eldest child inherited the role of provider almost overnight, working casual jobs during school breaks while trying to keep his grades up.
